(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two runners were attacked just hours apart - in broad daylight - on the Monon Trail.
Both crimes happened early Saturday afternoon just north of 86th Street. In the first, a man told police he was running south on the trail just after noon when four teens in hoodies came out from the trees - two on either side of the trail - and attacked him, punching and kicking him, then stealing his cell phone before taking off into the woods behind the strip mall right at 86th Street.
He went for help at a yogurt shop right off the trail. The man was bleeding by his nose and his knees were torn up and bloody.
The second attack happened two hours later in the same spot. This time, the teens were walking north on the trail and punched a man who was running south, knocking him to the ground and then dragging him into the woods, beating him before taking his cell phone and car keys. He said they then took off into the woods, also behind a strip mall near the trail.
WTHR reports, this summer, the hours to use the Monon Trail became 24/7.
Police believe the attacks are related, but so far have no suspects. In the meantime, they have assigned extra patrols to the area.
