(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana-Purdue University Indianapolis announced in an internal newsletter that it plans to add 15 all-gender restrooms, along with a new Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Center within the Multicultural Center in Taylor Hall.
IUPUI says the all-gender restrooms are open to everyone "regardless of gender expression or identity. This provides all students another option that may enhance their feelings of comfort and safety. Such facilities are especially important for the trans and gender nonconforming people who may feel vulnerable and stigmatized in certain restroom environments."
The new bathrooms can also help caregivers of children "for whom a single gender-specific restroom poses difficulties."
In the first phase of the project, 15 bathrooms in 12 buildings will get the all-gender designation. The focus will be on single-occupancy restrooms during the first phase. Not all restrooms on campus will be converted to all-gender.
