(VANDERBURGH CO.) - The name of the teen who was struck and killed by a train in northern Vanderburgh County on Tuesday has been released.
Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Lockyear says the victim has been identified as 16-year-old Christian Fulkerson, of Evansville. We're told Fulkerson was a student at Central High School.
Lockyear says an autopsy is scheduled for noon on Wednesday.
The crash happened around 6:30 p.m., near Old State Road and Hillsdale Road.
Sheriff Dave Wedding says the train was headed south when a member of the crew saw Fulkerson laying across the tracks. The train was not able to stop in time.
Investigators tell us the only witnesses were the train personnel.
While it's too early to say if they suspect foul play, the sheriff says the situation is unusual.
"We consider it certainly odd to have a person laying across the railroad tracks. The investigators understand that, but he was laying across the railroad tracks according to railroad personnel."
The sheriff says there was a car nearby, but it's not clear whether Fulkerson had been driving it.
CSX is working with the sheriff's office on this investigation.
This is the second Central student to be killed by a train this year.
