(FORT WAYNE) - Health officials say a case of meningococcal disease has been discovered at an elementary school in Fort Wayne.
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department said Monday that the case is at St. Joseph Central Elementary School in the Fort Wayne Community Schools district.
The disease is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis. Health officials say the affected person is under medical supervision and no longer at the school. The health department says it is working with state and federal health authorities and school officials to identify people who had close contact with the infected person. The disease isn't spread through casual contact.
All students, faculty and staff at the school will receive free antibiotics Tuesday as a preventative measure. However health officials say the risk of transmission is low.
