(LAFAYETTE)- A Lafayette woman who lived with her dead husband’s body for nine months pleaded guilty Friday.
55-year-old Ila Solomon pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of failing to report a dead body and unlawful disposal. Tuesday she was sentenced to one year and 180; 60 days of that sentence will be spent at the Tippecanoe County Community Corrections Center and the first 180 will be supervised. She will also serve 100 hours of community service and is banned from being a caregiver.
According to the Tippecanoe County coroner, Solomon's husband, 88-year-old Gerald "Scooter" Gavan died around July 15, 2013. His body wasn't found until May 2014.
Solomon said Gavan wanted to be outside after dying because he wanted a sky burial, which is an ancient funeral practice where birds dispose of a corpse.
She claimed she didn't report the death to fulfill her husband's unusual burial request.
