(GREENWOOD) - A Hendricks County jail inmate who escaped in a stolen truck has been recaptured in a southern Indianapolis suburb.
Hendricks County Sheriff Brett Clark says 32-year-old Wayne E. Mitchell of Indianapolis was recaptured Friday afternoon.
The Indianapolis Star reports that Mitchell was part of a program allowing trusted inmates to work outside the jail. He has been jailed since Dec. 18 for failure to appear.
Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Capt. Amanda Goings says Mitchell was working in a municipal garage Thursday when he stole a truck belonging to the county planning department. He was last seen about 7:15 p.m.
His escape wasn't discovered until 4:20 a.m. Friday. He was recaptured later Friday near the Greenwood Mall without incident.
The outside inmate worker program has been suspended while officials review procedures.
