(EVANSVILLE) - An Evansville man was arrested after he admitted he beat his his baby girl’s head against the Pack ‘N Play so hard that she suffered a fractured skull.
Police arrested 23-year-old Stephen Elsey on two charges of battery causing serious bodily injury to a child under the age of 14. Elsey is being held in the Vanderburgh County jail without bond.
Investigators believe Elsey was watching his 2-month-old daughter on Sunday when he became upset when she would not stop crying, according to an Evansville Police Department news release. He allegedly intentionally hit the girl's head against the metal railing of a Pack 'n' Play crib. The infant suffered a fractured skull due to the incident.
Elsey originally told investigators he didn't know how his daughter was injured, but then said it happened when she accidently fell from his lap, according to the release. It wasn't until after several interviews that Elsey admitted he injured the infant when she wouldn't stop crying.
During treatment for the infant's skull, hospital staff discovered a healing wound on one of the girl's collarbones. Elsey told police he may have caused that injury in in January when he became upset with the infant and forcefully laid her down in her crib.
All of the other children are now in protective custody.
