(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Michael R. Pence, together with the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, has proclaimed the month of March as Disability Awareness Month.
Disability Awareness Month aims to spread awareness of the positive impact people with disabilities make in our communities and promote a message of inclusion for everyone in our communities.
For more than two decades, the Governor's Council has spearheaded Disability Awareness Month through a unique statewide grassroots awareness campaign that includes creating theme-specific educational materials, distributed free of charge. Materials include posters, bookmarks, stickers and activity-planning packets that assist individuals in planning events in their own local communities.
The 2016 Disability Awareness Month theme is "Inclusion is Within Everyone's Ability." The campaign's posters feature individuals with different abilities connecting with each other and participating in shared experiences.
People with disabilities, advocates, schools, businesses and faith-based and community organizations throughout Indiana have committed thousands of hours to conducting activities that promote and support the mission of Disability Awareness Month. The success of this campaign is entirely dependent on volunteers giving of themselves and their time.
"Our lives are so much richer when we open our minds and hearts to those who have different perspectives and experiences," said Christine Dahlberg, executive director of the Governor's Council. "Disability Awareness Month creates an opportunity to connect with others and communicate the value that people of all ages and abilities bring to our communities."

The Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, which focuses on advocacy and leadership training, began in 1970 and has flourished in the areas of systems change advocacy, self-advocacy groups, Partners in Policymaking, Fifth Freedom grassroots efforts, community leadership, public policy and civic engagement. Over the past 46 years, the Council has empowered tens of thousands of Hoosiers with disabilities to create positive change throughout the state.
