(WHEATLAND) - A Knox County woman charged with murder in the stabbing death of a Wheatland man entered a not guilty plea via video conference in a Knox County Courtroom Thursday.
39-year-old Candice Charlton of Wheatland faces a murder charge in the February 5 stabbing death of Gerald Sturgeon.
Knox County officials responded to a home on Short Street after receiving reports of a domestic dispute. It was there, they found Sturgeon in the doorway of the home with stab wound to his back. First responders delivered first aid to Surgeon, but he was later pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris said at the time of the incident, Sturgeon and Charlton knew each other but it wasn't immediately clear what led to the incident. Officers did recover the weapon used to stabbed Sturgeon at the scene.
The court set a trial date for Charlton in June of 2016.
Both the victim and suspect have criminal records.
According to recent court records, Sturgeon had resided in Washington's Sundale Trailer Court in July 2015, but the address of Friday night's incident was listed as Charlton's on other court documents.
Daviess County Court news published in the January 9, 2016, issue of the Times Herald showed Sturgeon had been convicted of battery on a person less than 14 years of age. Charlton, according to court records, had been charged with neglect of a dependent in Pike County in August 2013.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released when available.
