(POSEY CO.) - A Posey County woman is facing six counts in what officials are calling a disturbing case of animal cruelty.
Police say when they went to 41-year-old Shelly Dossett's home on Graddy Road in Mt. Vernon back in February, it smelled like feces and urine.
Police say there was little food and no water. One dog was reportedly drinking urine from a litter box.
Animal control officers took four dogs and three cats from the home. They are recovering at the Posey Humane Society. Official there say the dogs had overgrown nails, were underweight, had fleas, and one had heartworms.
Police found two dead dogs on the property. One of them was in a sack in the kitchen. The other was in a car.
A pathologist says one of the dead died from starvation, had a fractured liver, and heartworms. The other dog died from starvation and was extremely emaciated and dehydrated.
Dossett is charged with six counts of animal cruelty. She has bonded out of jail.
