(LEXINGTON, IN) - Three people were killed, including two children, and five more were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday night in Scott County.
At approximately 7:45 p.m. Scott County Sheriff's Department responded to a serious crash on State Road 203, also known as East Cherry Street, just north of Hunt Street in Lexington, according to a press release.
Alfonso B. Qualls, 36, of Lexington; Mariah Qualls, 8, of Lexington; and Kaden A. Pedigo, 10, of Austin died in the crash while Alfonso Qualls Jr., 6, of Lexington; Jasmine Qualls, 2, of Lexington; and Makayla Qualls, infant of Lexington suffered life-threatening injuries.
Two more people - 21-year-old Jacob S. Pettit of Madison and 26-year-old Marjus C. Turner of Lexington - suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police reconstructionists revealed that a white 2002 KIA Spectra, being driven by Alfonso B. Qualls, was traveling northbound approaching a curve on SR 203 as a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by Pettit was traveling southbound. As the vehicles met in the curve, the KIA Spectra, allegedly left its travel lane and crossed into the path of the pickup.
According to the press release, "due to the injuries suffered by the occupants of the KIA Spectra it is believed that none of the occupants were restrained by seat belts. The infant child was in a car seat at the time of the collision however, it appears as though it was not properly secured in the vehicle."
Qualls was driving with a suspended driver's license, according to the release and an alcohol and substance blood test will be performed on him.
