(MUNCIE) - Dozens of cats in Muncie will have to be put in new homes. Animal control and authorities removed the felines Monday from a suspected animal hoard on Haymarket Road.
Tuesday afternoon, the felines packed two rooms at the Muncie Animal Shelter.
Director Phil Peckinpaugh says the cat hoard was likely months and years in the making. He will be working with law enforcement agents over the next few days to determine if charges will be filed.
The shelter took in 35 cats Monday and had 20 more still inside the home.
Officials were tipped off at the reported bad conditions inside by a neighbor.
Staff members said the animals were hiding in the ceilings and behind walls, with most of them appearing to be in decent shape despite their environment.
Officials say the inside the mobile home was dirty, with trash everywhere and months of cat feces and urine and reeked.
The owner told FOX59 he was just trying to help the cats.
The animal shelter is putting out a call for supplies, like cat litter and food, as they try to give the pets a new chance. Many will likely be sent to rescues out of state.
