(RIPLEY CO.) - A Columbus man, who was air-lifted on Sunday after suffering injuries resulting from an off-road vehicle crash, passed away Monday at approximately 1:23 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati Hospital.
An autopsy is scheduled for later in the week.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., Sunday, 51-year-old Thomas Johnson of Columbus was found pinned under his Artic Cat 500 ATV by other riders.
Johnson was found unresponsive. Emergency personnel arrived shortly after to the 900 block of County Road 850 West in Holton and administered CPR.
Johnson was air-lifted to the University of Cincinnati Hospital.
Indiana Conservation Officers, Ripley County Deputies, Fire and EMS personnel arrived shortly after the incident occurred and are currently investigating. It is believed that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
This tragedy marks the 16th death in Indiana as a result of an Off-Road Vehicle crash this year. There have been 182 reported crashes this year, with 191 people injured.
Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to wear a helmet and necessary safety equipment when operating Off-Road Vehicles. It is encouraged to abstain from alcohol when operating any motor vehicle.
