(EVANSVILLE) - University of Southern Indiana leaders are working on plans to hire full-time police officers for the campus in Evansville.
The school has hired off-duty sheriff's deputies for the past year. The Evansville Courier & Press reports the school is seeking $750,000 annually in the next two-year state budget to have five full-time officers.
University vice president Steve Bridges says plans are to have a contract with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department to provide 24-hour patrols rather than establish a new police department for the 10,000-student campus.
The school now has a 16-person public safety staff, whose responsibilities include medical runs, student welfare checks and parking enforcement.
