(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is kicking off National Apprenticeship Week (Nov. 14-20, 2016) by providing up to $700,000 in grants to existing and emerging apprenticeship programs across Indiana.
Funds will be given to programs that engage industry and other partners to expand apprenticeships to non-traditional sectors and underserved populations, identify ways to promote and advance greater inclusion and diversity in apprenticeships and/or create or expand pre-apprenticeship programs for both youth and adults.
"The apprenticeship training model has been effective in construction and the skilled trades for decades and is replicable across all sectors, including healthcare, IT and advanced manufacturing," said DWD Commissioner Steven J. Braun. "This grant program is designed to cultivate apprenticeship programs in growing non-traditional fields and encourage diversity in apprenticeship programs across the state."
A recent Apprenticeship Week proclamation from Governor Mike Pence addresses the importance of apprenticeships. It notes that Indiana has 544 registered apprenticeship programs currently serving nearly 14,000 Hoosiers. The proclamation also encourages the development of apprenticeship programs, which are a win-win for both employers and employees and a proven method of skilling up Indiana's workforce.
"Research affirms that apprenticeships and work-and-learn opportunities result in greater exposure to career options, more engaged employees, higher job satisfaction and a beneficial experience for both student and employer," added Braun. "The expansion of apprenticeship opportunities is essential to further develop Indiana's workforce and fill the one million jobs expected to become available over the next decade."
The deadline to apply for the Apprenticeship Expansion Grant is December 12, 2016. Visit www.in.gov/dwd/apprenticeship.htm for grant guidelines, including a timeline, list of eligible applicants and more application information.
