(GREENFIELD) - Indiana Conservation officers are investigating an accidental shooting of a Greenfield man.
31-year-old Dustin Fischer of Greenfield and 26-year-old Johnathan Armstrong, also of Greenfield, were coyote hunting on Saturday evening on private property near Wilkinson, in Hancock County.
After an evening of hunting, both men returned to Armstrong's truck. Armstrong placed his .223 caliber rifle on the rear floorboard of the quad-cab pickup prior to Fischer returning to the truck.
When Fischer went to lay his rifle in the floorboards as well, Armstrong's rifle fired, striking Fischer in the left arm. Armstrong and the landowner were able to apply a tourniquet to Fischer's arm in an attempt to stop the bleeding. He was transported to Hancock Regional Hospital and then airlifted to St. Frances Hospital. He underwent surgery that evening for his injuries.
Indiana Conservation Officer Scott Johnson is investigating the shooting. He was assisted at the scene by Other Indiana Conservation Officers, Hancock County Sheriff Department, Shirley Police Department, Shirley VFD, Wilkinson VFD and Greenfield Fire Territory.
Even though it is lawful to carry a loaded long gun in a vehicle, it is certainly not the safest way to transport a firearm. One of the rules for firearms safety is to be sure that your firearm is unloaded and cased before transporting in a vehicle.
