(GARY) - Authorities say a man and a sheriff’s department dog were wounded in an exchange of gunfire involving a sheriff’s officer following an Indiana traffic stop.
State police say the Lake County officer stopped a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Gary and the driver and passenger fled on foot in different directions. The officer and his K-9 partner pursued the passenger, 18-year-old Marquis Thomas, of Merrillville, who ran down an alley and fired at officers.
Thomas and K-9 Blade were wounded.
Thomas was transported to Loyola Hospital in Illinois by ambulance with life threatening injuries. He died Thursday night.
Blade was taken to an animal hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The driver of the silver car, later identified as a 2007 Toyota Avalon, has been located and has made a statement and is not considered a threat to this case.
