(COLUMBUS) - Two people were arrested after a police chase involving a stolen vehicle ended in a crash near Hartsville Sunday morning.
According to a Columbus Police report, an officer on patrol spotted the stolen SUV that had been taken from a rural area of the county at about 5 a.m. near Indiana Avenue and Salzburg Boulevard.
But when the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over the driver fled leading the officer on a 30 minute chase through several farm fields, plowing through an electric fence and attempted to avoid stop sticks before crashing into trees along Clifty Creek near Hartsville.
The driver, 30-year-old Jose Vera of Columbus, tried to run and swam into the creek refusing to come out until he was apprehended by Columbus K-9 Argo.
Vera was treated at Columbus Regional Hospital for a dog bite and hypothermia before being taken to jail.
Police also arrested his passenger, 18-year-old Alexis Ketchum.
Vera is facing charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement by fleeing and driving while his driver's license was suspended with a prior conviction. Ketchum is being facing charges of auto theft and resisting law enforcement by fleeing.
