(STATEHOUSE) - Several education bills authored by State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) have passed the Indiana Senate this legislative session.
Senate Bill 29 would ensure that every high school student in Indiana would have the option to take an elective course on Indiana studies. Right now, only 11 of Indiana's 401 high schools offer Indiana Studies as an elective.
Senate Bill 30 would require the Indiana Department of Education to provide each school corporation with more data about transfers to charter schools, voucher schools or inter-district public schools.
Senate Bill 412 would protect money saved in a 529 education savings plan from being counted as an asset when applying for certain public assistance programs and scholarships. This will encourage college savings by allowing students to get full financial assistance without a reduction due to their education savings.
These bills will now be considered by the House of Representatives. More information on these bills can be found at https://iga.in.gov/
