(MUNCIE) - Sunday night around 10:40 p.m. Trooper Dana Harvey was driving west on Willard St. near Madison St. in Muncie, when an east bound minivan drove left of center nearly hitting his police car. Harvey turned around and was able to get the van, which was also speeding and found to have an expired license plate, to stop at 5th and Blaine St.
After making contact with the driver, 48-year-old Deidre Strong, of Muncie, he suspected she was impaired from drinking alcoholic beverages. Further investigation and preliminary testing showed that Strong had a blood alcohol content more than 1½ times the legal limit of .08 percent blood-alcohol content.
Strong's two minor passengers, both under the age of ten, were released to Delaware County Department of Child Services personnel at the scene.
Strong was arrested and taken to the Delaware County Jail on felony charges of neglect of a dependent, and operating a vehicle while Intoxicated with a passenger under the age of 18 years of age.
Motorists are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1. Give a vehicle description, location, and direction of travel. Never follow an impaired driver.
