(WEST LAFAYETTE) - After two intense days of competing robots, robotics teams 234 and 1018 from Indianapolis, and 4926 from Columbus have emerged as champions from the Tippecanoe District Robotics Event. In order to win, these teams were required to face 38 other teams from across Indiana in a series of qualification matches.
Team Cyber Blue's stellar performance put them in the number four seed, allowing them to pick Pike RoboDevils and GalacTech as alliance partners. From here, this alliance dominated the elimination matches. With a perfect win record and one tie they defeated three separate alliances in a standard tournament bracket.
Chris Fultz, lead mentor for team 234 Cyber Blue said, "The Tippecanoe District was an exciting and well run event. All of the teams continued to learn the game play and improve and the event became more and more competitive as the matches progressed. We were excited to form a strong, effective alliance with Team 1018 and Team 4926 and we knew that any of the 8 alliances could become the event champions. Things went our way, and it was great to have 3 very close, exciting matches for the finals and to come out on top. We are looking forward to seeing many of these teams again in a few weeks at the Perry District."
These teams' successful performance will catapult them towards qualification to the Indiana District Championship in Huntington, IN while also earning them a significant number of district points. Additional teams will also qualify for the championship based on their performance at two of three additional district competitions, held at Penn High School (March 11th-12th) and Perry Meridian High School (March 24th-25th).
This event wouldn't have been possible without support from the following 2017 FRC® Indiana District Tippecanoe Event & IndianaFIRST State-Wide Sponsors: Tippecanoe School Corporation, AndyMark, Rolls-Royce, Renaissance Electronic Services, University of Indianapolis, Rarebird, Software Engineering Professionals, Allfuses.com, 80/20, Inc., Allied Automation, Barnes & Thornburg, Cook, Dow AgroSciences, MTD, Cargill, Amazon, Raytheon, & Homeadvisor.com.
Founded by inventor Dean Kamen, who introduced the IBOT Mobility System and the Segway® Human Transporter (HT), FIRST was created to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people, their schools, and their communities. The FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates over 3,100 teams in the U.S. and 24 countries worldwide to compete in 53 Regional Events and 65 District Events. Thousands of students will compete at the district, state and regional events to earn a spot at the World Championship to be held April 27-30 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO.
"FIRST isn't about competing, it's about cooperating, and recognizing that if you have the right tools, you'll be able to make this world a better place for yourself and for the country," said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research and Development and FIRST Founder, adding, "There is no stimulus package that will have as much return as stimulating a bunch of kids to become the workforce of the future, the problem solvers, the creators of the future."
This season, participating FIRST students are eligible to apply for more than $50 million in scholarships being made available by nearly 200 scholarship providers.
