(ELGIN),ILL.) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission levied a $4.65 million fine against Viking Range LLC, of Greenwood, Miss., and its parent owner, The Middleby Corp., of Elgin, Ill., for failing to make timely disclosure that a defect in its gas ranges could create an unreasonable risk of injury.
CPSC says the company received 170 reports about ranges that had ignited spontaneously and could not be turned off using the control knobs.
Viking earlier recalled 52,000 of the ranges that were sold from mid-2007 through mid-2014 for prices ranging from $4,000 to $13,000.
