(UNDATED) - The Internal Revenue Service expects more than 8 million requests to delay on Tuesday’s federal tax filing deadline.
Extensions are automatic, the IRS said, but there's a catch. While the deadline for filing a return was extended, it does not affect Tuesday's deadline for submitting a tax payment.
Customarily, the tax filing deadline is April 15 but this year it was pushed back to April 18th because April 15 fell on a Saturday and April 17 is observed as Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia.
