(VINCENNES) - Knox County Coroner Brian Hagen says a five-year-old Vincennes boy died Tuesday at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis after emergency responders found him unresponsive in his home Tuesday morning.
The boy's father, 53-year-old James Baldwin, was arrested for attempted murder and is now expected face a murder charge.
Vincennes Police Chief Dusty Luking says the child had been smothered and strangled with an object in his home in the 1320 block of Bayou Street.
Officers were called to the home after receiving a call from a man who said "I killed my son."
Officials found the boy unresponsive when they arrived. Resuscitation efforts were started as soon as possible and the child was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and then airlifted to another medical facility.
Police say the boy was in "grave condition."
Police then questioned Baldwin, and arrested him on a preliminary charge of attempted murder.
Baldwin is being held without bond in the Knox County Jail.
