(UNDATED) - The Congressional Research Service calculated that 1,003,792 Americans have died in wars dating back to the 1775 start of the Revolutionary War.
Not all died in combat. CRS reports, 428,520 - or 42.7 percent - died from non-combat causes.
For example, of 13,283 Americans who died in the Mexican War, 11,550 died from sicknesses. Wars (and deaths) were: Revolutionary War (4,435), War of 1812 (2,260), Mexican War (13,283), Civil War (Union forces only, 364,511), Spanish-American War (2,446), World War I (116,516), World War II (405,399), Korean War (36,574), Vietnam Conflict (58,220), and Persian Gulf War (363).
