(STATEHOUSE) - Two pieces of legislation authored by State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) have passed the Indiana General Assembly and have been signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb.
Senate Enrolled Act 2 and Senate Enrolled Act 376 modernize enabling statutes for the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) and Rural Electric Membership Cooperatives (REMCs) that were first enacted in the 1980s. The legislation updates the statutes to allow the 60 IMPA member utilities and the 38 REMCs in Indiana to continue to provide their service territories with low-cost, reliable and environmentally responsible power.
"Sen. Koch recognized that the world and our industry has changed a bit over the last 36 years, and that the statute governing the working relationship - the partnership - that IMPA has with our municipal electric members was in need of modernization," said Carolyn Wright, Vice President of Government Relations for IMPA. "IMPA is extremely grateful to Sen. Koch for guiding SEA 2 through the Indiana General Assembly during the 2017 legislative session."
"This legislation modernizes the REMC Act to better reflect the new and emerging ways Indiana's electric cooperatives interact with their member-owners," Tom VanParis, Chief Executive Officer of Indiana Electric Cooperatives said about SEA 376.
