(INDIANAPOLIS) - Legislative leaders have created a 17-member study committee to review alcohol laws top to bottom.
The panel will issue a report by November on retail regulations, from Sunday sales to which permit holders are allowed to sell what. In 2018, they'll look at everything else.
Senate President Pro Tem David Long and House Speaker Brian Bosma had promised the review after permits issued to two Ricker's convenience stores reignited a debate over what both men call antiquated laws. Bosma says that controversy, and permits issued to other nontraditional locations like nail salons and hardware stores, caught the attention both of legislators and the public. He says it's past time for a comprehensive review.
Nine of the 17 members will be non-legislators, but lobbyists and anyone with an ownership interest in alcohol permits will be ineligible to serve. Long says he's looking for a non-legislator with unquestioned integrity to chair the panel.
19 study committees will examine 51 different topics, including how to prepare for changes in the federal health care law, and how to regulate Airbnb. A newly created panel will review the salaries of Indiana's seven statewide elected officials.
