Fire Damages Great Wall Restaurant In Jasper

Last updated on Monday, June 19, 2017

(JASPER) - A fire interrupted those having lunch at the Great Wall restaurant in Jasper after smoke filled the dining room Sunday afternoon.

Everyone was evacuated out of the restaurant at 272 Brucke Strasse before firefighters arrived. More than 28 firefighter fighters responded and were on the scene for about an hour and 15 minutes.

According to Jasper Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kenny Hochgesang, grease had built up in between some fryers and a wall in the kitchen overheated and caught fire causing smoke to travel up into the attic and into the dining area.

The fire damaged a 2-by-8 portion of the wall and there was some smoke damage throughout the restaurant. Hochgesang estimates damages around $5,000.

The restaurant was closed to make repairs.

Assisting at the scene were officers with Jasper Police Department and Dubois County Sheriff's Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services.
