(SULLIVAN CO.) - Efforts are underway to extradite a former inmate in the Sullivan County Jail to North Carolina to face first degree murder charges in the murders of an elderly Ashville couple in December of 1989.
Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom says 42-year-old Eric Begley of Shelburn, who was being held on unrelated charges, gave a statement recently admitting his involvement in the murders of 79-year-old Cleve McMahan and his 75-year-old wife Allene.
North Carolina officials say one to two others may have been involved in the murders.
Cottom says he has moved Begley to another location for safety and security purposes.
Sheriff Cottom also says investigators believe Begley is the lone suspect in the March 29th armed robbery of the Country Porch gas station in Sullivan.
Sheriff Cottom says Begley has been ruled out as a suspect in the unsolved murders of Lowell Badger in 2012 and Sarah Jeanette Benson of Farmersburg in 1981.
