(PIKE CO.) - On Friday, July 28, at approximately 5:50 pm, Indiana Conservation Officer Kenny Tincher responded to an ORV accident in Pike County.
19-year-old Jody Schatz of Decker was operating a Honda ORV on County Road 825 West in Hazelton.
Schatz was traveling south bound crossing State Road 65 when he was struck by a Honda passenger car traveling west bound. The operator of the vehicle, 29-year-old Jonathon Harper of Petersburg was traveling west bound on State Road 65 with a juvenile in the front passenger seat. Harper was unable to avoid a collision with Schatz's ORV and they collided. Schatz was ejected from his ORV and thrown into the Honda passenger car's windshield.
Schatz was Air-Evaced to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where he was treated for multiple lacerations and head trauma. The juvenile was transported to Gibson General Hospital with minor injuries.
Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted on-scene by Pike County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Petersburg Police, Pike EMS, Union Fire and Deaconess Air-Evac.
Schatz was not wearing a helmet or protective equipment which Conservation Officers strongly encourage while operating ORV's.
