(VIGO CO.) - The Vigo County coroner says a Terre Haute city official recently suspended amid a federal investigation has been found dead.
Christopher Mark Thompson's body was found Thursday in a pickup truck in rural southern Vigo County.
Thompson, who served as director of the wastewater treatment plant, died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, said Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos. Thompson died about 5 p.m. Thursday.
Police were notified of a possible suicide about 6:23 p.m. Thursday in the 11000 block of Stephens Drive. Thompson was inside his truck, which was running but not moving. A handgun was found at the scene.
FBI agents with a search warrant raided the city's wastewater treatment plant offices July 19, removing more than two dozen boxes of files and other evidence.
Bennett that afternoon said it was his understanding the investigation focused on a single, unnamed individual.
To date, neither the FBI nor the U.S. attorney's office has commented on the probe other than to confirm its existence. A U.S. attorney's spokesman on Friday did say the investigation would continue.
On Tuesday, the Terre Haute Board of Sanitary Commissioners suspended Thompson with pay after hearing from its attorney, Terry Modesitt, who also is the Vigo County prosecutor.
