(FORT WAYNE) - Ivy Tech Community College is erecting a large, state-of-the-art greenhouse at its Fort Wayne campus.
The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reports the 3,000-square-foot facility is being financed by $486,000 in donations and grants. It is slated to open this fall.
The school says it will have hydroponics capabilities -- growing plants with water and no soil -- which will be a boon for agriculture students.
The school also plans to allow its' culinary and hospitality programs to use produce grown in it.
Ivy Tech hopes the greenhouse will eventually become self-sustaining with solar panels, a wind turbine and a rainwater collection system.
