(WASHINGTON, DC) - The Central Intelligence Agency marked the 60th anniversary of Russia’s launch of the Sputnik satellite by declassifying a collection of documents related to the event.
The October 4, 1957, launch stunned the U.S. public and press, but the CIA documents reveal the intelligence agency was aware of the Russian space program as early as 1955.
The collection of 59 documents include memoranda and reports that were provided to President Eisenhower.
