(PUTNAM CO.) - On Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m., an Indiana State Police trooper from the Putnamville Post stopped a 2003 Nissan Maxima for following other vehicles too closely.
The traffic stop was made in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 40 mile marker and during conversations with the two occupants, the trooper developed suspicion of possible criminal activity.
A search of the vehicle yielded 109 cartons of cigarettes in the trunk area without Indiana tax stamps. All items were seized.
The driver, 18-year-old Donovan Jackson of Ruffsdale, Pennsylvania and his 55-year-old passenger, Frank E. Spillar of Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania were taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Jail. Both were preliminarily charged with one count each of tobacco tax violation, class A misdemeanor.
Under Indiana law, person(s) are only allowed to possess no more than 1500 cigarettes without the required tax stamps. The duo was traveling from Missouri to Pennsylvania.
