Shortly after 7 a.m. on Sunday, October 29th 2017, Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a report of an active drowning in the north end of Long Lake.
Responding officers learned 20-year-old Keegan Whaling was canoeing on the lake with a friend when the canoe they were in became unstable and they both fell into the water.
The surviving victim was able to remove his coat and safely swim toward shore. While still in the water, he lost sight of Keegan and did not see him on the surface again. He made it to shore and summoned help from a lake resident who called 911.
The investigation has revealed life jackets were not worn or possessed by either of the boat's occupants at the time of the incident
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday and foul play is not suspected. Crossman Consulting is a private company, sought out by the Whaling family to aid in the search effort. Any questions regarding search methods and equipment utilized in today's recovery should be forwarded to Crossman Consulting.
