(BRAZIL) - Marion County Sheriff John R. Layton has been elected by fellow sheriffs to serve as president of the Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch for future law enforcement officers and at-risk kids.
Layton was elected to replace Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, who was immediately nominated and elected to stay on the board as an at-large trustee. Both elections were by unanimous vote.
Often credited with the vision of the Youth Ranch, Layton has worked alongside Nielsen in being a vocal advocate and active fundraiser for the statewide not-for-profit since its creation in 2016.
For 38 years, sheriffs and deputies have hosted career and leadership camps for Indiana middle schoolers. The new Indiana Sheriffs' Youth Ranch, now under development in rural West Central Indiana, will be the permanent site of those camps - which are expected to expand to more days per week and more weeks per summer.
