(UNDATED) - Terminix International Co. LP, the world’s largest pest control company with operations in 47 states and 22 countries, and its operating subsidiary in the U.S. Virgin Islands were ordered to pay a $10 million criminal penalty for using a banned fumigant at a St. John resort that left a family of four seriously ill, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.
The family, which struggled for more than a year to regain their health, received an earlier $87 million settlement, according to news reports.
DOJ said two workers sprayed a fumigant that contained methyl bromide, a substance that has been banned for residential use since 1984, in the condominium that was below the unit occupied by the family.
