(MADISON CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an off-road vehicle accident in Madison County.
Officers say 39-year-old Mathew Montgomery, of Alexandria was injured after being thrown from his vehicle.
Around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 2600 block of south County Road 500 West following a 911 call of an ORV accident. It was reported that the operator was riding an ORV somewhere in a field and was believed to be pinned under his vehicle at an unknown location.
Montgomery was later located in the backyard of a residence in the 4200 block of west County Road 100 South. He was not pinned under the vehicle, but was badly injured.
According to Montgomery, he had struck something that caused him to be ejected over the handlebars. The ORV then ran over him before coming to a stop in a brush pile.
Montgomery suffered multiple broken bones and lacerations, including a gash in his chin and one on top of his head. He was reportedly wearing gloves and goggles at the time, but was not wearing a helmet.
Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
The incident is still under investigation.
Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind the public to never drink before riding off-road vehicles. They also remind everyone that while riding, always wear proper safety gear, especially a helmet.
