Final Exam Safety Tips That Aren't On The Syllabus
Last updated on Wednesday, December 6, 2017
(UNDATED) - Each semester, millions of students stay up late, catch up on assignments and study as much as possible to maintain or save their GPAs.
Final exams are a stressful time of year, but it's important that Indiana students understand final exam safety and make wise decisions.
Follow these final exam season tips to save GPAs and improve safety:
- Know the Campus Safety/Security emergency number.
- Subscribe to the campus mass notification system.
- Know the layout of the campus during the day and the best lit areas at night.
- Avoid having a predictable schedule and path-it makes it easier to become a target for crime.
- Share class schedules with friends, roommates and family.
- Tell roommates when leaving the dorm.
- Travel in groups at night and never walk alone.
- Walk in well-lighted areas whenever possible and avoid shortcuts.
- Stay alert to surroundings.
- Avoid carrying overly heavy backpacks, large purses or items that obstruct movements.
- Have keys ready while approaching vehicle.
Although final exams are demanding, avoid the use of study drugs. A national survey concluded that one in five college students reported abusing prescription stimulants. The short-term effects may seem appealing, but the long-term effects are detrimental. These stimulants are highly addictive and can cause injury, heart problems and death. This is especially true when combined with other drugs or depressants. EMS professionals recommend following these healthy alternatives instead:
- Exercise for as little as 30 minutes, as it reduces stress and increases energy and endorphins.
- Sleep at least six to eight hours for better concentration and memory.
- Eat junk food in moderation.
- Mild dehydration causes fatigue, so drink plenty of water.
- Break study schedules into manageable pieces and create small tangible goals.
- Take frequent mental breaks to prevent fatigue.
- Consider taking B-12 vitamins, which can naturally increase energy.
