Fort Wayne To Install Parking Meters, Higher Hourly Rates

Last updated on Wednesday, December 27, 2017

(FORT WAYNE) - People soon will be able to pay for parking on Fort Wayne streets using credit cards and mobile devices.

The Journal Gazette reports the City Council voted 8-1 to approve a nearly $800,000 contract to replace the city's coin-only meters with machines that accept the new forms of payment.

City Clerk Lana Keesling says parking rates will need to increase to cover the cost of cellular data to connect to the meters to the city's network as well as credit card transaction fees.

There's no exact date for when the new meters will be in place or when the increase will occur. Keesling says an upcoming parking study will help determine the new rate.

Parking is currently 50 cents per hour. It could reach up to $1.25 hourly.
