(MADISON CO.) - The Madison County Coroner says a jail officer who was killed late Thursday evening died of strangulation.
Officers were called to a home in the 3600 block of IN-38 near Markleville around 11:30 p.m.
Witnesses told police that two men were sitting around a bonfire at the house when some kind of fight broke out after shots were fired.
When ISP troopers arrived, they found 29-year-old Uriah Wilson dead at the scene. Police believe he had been visiting the house where the incident happened.
An autopsy revealed that he had died of strangulation.
Uriah had worked at the Madison County Jail for five years, most recently as a supervisor.
29-year-old Joseph Hartley remains in custody as a person of interest in the death investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
Indiana State Police say their findings will be turned over to the Madison County Prosecutor's office for review and possible charges.
