American Lung Association Gives Indiana Bad Grades

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The American Lung Association is giving Indiana an “F” in three of five categories - tobacco prevention and cessation funding, tobacco tax and tobacco 21.

Its 2018 State of Tobacco Control report ranks the Hoosier state higher than last year, when Indiana received four "F" grades.

The association wants the state to raise the legal age to sell tobacco products to 21, raise the cigarette excise tax and pass a smoke-free air law to prevent smoking at bars and casinos.

Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Funding

• FY2018 State Funding for Tobacco Control Programs: $7,500,000


• FY2018 Federal Funding for State Tobacco Control Programs: $1,397,246*


• FY2018 Total Funding for State Tobacco Control Programs: $8,897,246


• CDC Best Practices State Spending Recommendation: $73,500,000


• Percentage of CDC Recommended Level: 12.1 percent


• State Tobacco-Related Revenue: $568,000,000
