Indiana Debates Hate-Crimes Law Today

Last updated on Tuesday, January 23, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana resumes the debate over a hate-crimes law today.

So far 22 states make hate crimes a separate offense.

Under a bill authored by LaGrange Senator Susan Glick, a person convicted of a crime could receive a longer sentence if the judge determines the victim was targeted based on sex, race, religion, disability or sexual identity.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long supports the measure, which passed the Senate in 2016 but didn't get a hearing in the House.

If the bill clears the Senate, it faces a friendlier welcome in the House than two years ago.
