Report: Indiana Among Worst States For Bridges In U.S.
Last updated on Wednesday, January 31, 2018
(UNDATED) - Indiana is in the bottom half of states when it comes to the number of deficient bridges that need work.
The American Road and Transportation Builders Association yesterday released its annual report that looks at the number and percentage of deficient bridges in the state.
Indiana is the 14th worst state in the nation.
The builders say just over 14 hundred of the state's 19 thousand bridges need work or are dangerous.
National Bridge Inventory: Indiana
- Of the 19,291 bridges in the state, 1,435, or 7.4 percent, are classified as structurally deficient. This means one of the key elements is in poor or worse condition.
- 48 structurally deficient bridges in the state are on the Interstate Highway System.
- 1,395 bridges are posted for load, which may restrict the size and weight of vehicles crossing the structure.
- Over the last five years, bridge investment has accounted for 37.0 percent of highway and bridge contract awards in the state, compared to an average of 28.9 percent nationwide.2
- Over the last 10 years, 1,892 new bridges have been constructed in the state; 958 have undergone major reconstruction.
- The state has identified needed repairs on 3,456 bridges; which the state estimates will cost $5.3 billion.3
