(ST. LEON) - Saturday at approximately 4:40 p.m., the Indiana State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on I-74 westbound near the 161.5 mile marker. A Hamilton, Ohio man died at the scene and three others were injured in the crash.
The initial investigation by Trp. Matt Holley, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team, indicated that a 2003 GMC truck being driven by Hannah L. May, age 25, Okeana, Ohio was traveling westbound on I-74 near the 161.5 mile marker. May lost control of the vehicle on the snow covered roadway. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled before coming to rest inverted off the roadway.
As a result of the collision, a back seat passenger Kevin J. Gutzwiller, 33, of Hamilton, Ohio was trapped under the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Dearborn County Coroner's Office. A front seat passenger, Alyssa A. Tucker, 22, of Cincinnati, Ohio was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition. A second back seat passenger, Johnathan Kirshuck, 5, (son of Alyssa Tucker) was transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. May was transported to the Dearborn County Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation determined that the roadway surface condition was a contributing factor in the crash. May's vehicle was believed to have been going too fast for the existing weather and roadway conditions at the time of the crash.
The occupants of the vehicle were also not properly restrained when the collision occurred.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by Dearborn County Fire and EMS along with the Dearborn County Coroner's Office.
