(GARRETT) - Indiana State Police say a sheriff’s deputy and a man were shot in an exchange of gunfire during a northeastern Indiana traffic stop.
State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner tells WPTA-TV the DeKalb County deputy suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand during Tuesday's night shooting in Garrett, about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne.
The condition of the man shot by the male deputy wasn't immediately known. Police haven't released either man's name.
Bohner says a Garrett police officer had initiated a traffic stop when the deputy arrived as backup and exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
He says police are investigating what led up to the shooting, who fired the first shot and how many rounds were fired. He says it's unclear if the Garrett officer fired his weapon.
