(FARMERSBURG) - The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says a pedestrian was struck and killed early Saturday morning on US 41 southbound near Farmersburg.
Authorities say the pedestrian was struck while walking on the highway by a semi-tractor trailer driven by Gordon Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Heavy rain was coming down at the time of the incident and there were no street lights near the site.
Smith, who was driving southbound in driving lane told police he was unable to see the pedestrian in time to avoid the accident.
The victim's name is being withheld pending pending further investigation and family notifications, the sheriff said in a news release.
The coroner's office, Sullivan police, Thunderbird Fire and Rescue, SCAT Ambulance assisted. Indiana State Police are assisting with the post-crash investigation.
