Coroner: Wounded Gunman Dies

Last updated on Monday, May 14, 2018

(EVANSVILLE) - A coroner’s office says a gunman who police say was wounded after he fired about a dozen shots at officers in southwestern Indiana and fatally shot a man during the attack has died.

The Vanderburgh County coroner's office says Barry Freeman died Sunday night after being hospitalized following the Friday night shooting in Evansville.

Police say officers responding to reported gunfire in a neighborhood saw Freeman standing in a driveway with a rifle and that he opened fire on them.

Police say Freeman ran away and fired more times until he was shot by an officer.

Police say it appeared 59-year-old Jeffrey Kempf of Evansville came outside to see what was happening and was randomly targeted by Freeman. No police officers were wounded.
