(LOWELL) - On Saturday at approximately 10 p.m., a semi tractor-trailer was southbound on I-65 at the 240 mile marker. This is at the Lowell exit and also in the construction zone.
Preliminary investigation by Troopers Zach Beaver and Kurtis Jones shows that a 2013 Freightliner, owned by Eagle Expressways Inc., left the roadway and traveled into the woods west of the interstate. The truck traveled approximately 300 feet into the woods before coming to a rest.
First responders were initially unable to reach the driver due to the trees that were surrounding the vehicle. Fire crews on scene were able to clear an area to the cab portion of the vehicle using chainsaws. Once the driver was safely removed from the vehicle, he refused medical treatment at the scene.
The driver, identified as Freddie Williams, 55 of Macon, Georgia, stated that he was traveling south on I-65, when he swerved to avoid another passenger car that had cut him off. Investigation by Troopers did not reveal any skid marks or sudden actions by the truck; but rather a gradual path leading from the interstate, then barreling through approximately 300 feet of trees. The trailer was loaded with snack items bound for Delta Airlines.
Assisting with the vehicle removal was Cheever's Towing, the Crown Point Fire Department, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
