Last updated on Sunday, July 29, 2018

(CLINTON CO.) - Saturday morning, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 75 near Clinton County Road 425 North, in which a Camden woman died.

The preliminary crash investigation by Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Tyler Stinson revealed that Clinton County Reserve Sheriff's Deputy William Amsler, 58, Frankfort, IN was driving a 2008 Dodge Charger police car northbound on State Road 75, near Clinton County Road 425 North. Amanda Grimes, 40, Camden, IN was driving a 2002 Volkswagen southbound on State Road 75 North, near Clinton County Road 425 North.

For an undetermined reason, the Volkswagen traveled off the westside of the road, Grimes allegedly overcorrected, and traveled across the center line, into the northbound lane of State Road 75. The police car struck the Volkswagen in the passenger's side. The vehicles came to rest in the east ditch.

Preliminary evidence revealed the police car had emergency lights and siren activated, as Deputy Amsler was on an emergency call.

Grimes was initially transported by ambulance to a local hospital. She was then flown to an Indianapolis hospital, via Lifeline Medical Helicopter. Unfortunately, she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Officer Amsler was transported to a local hospital with a complaint of pain.

This is an ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Assisting Senior Trooper Stinson at the crash scene was the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, the Rossville Fire Department, and Clinton County paramedics.
